Using Reddit for Podcasting

Reddit’s claim as “the front-page of the internet” might be a bold claim, but the extent of it’s potential as a community forum and the opportunity it presents for podcasters is significant. It’s seemingly endless number of spaces, or subreddits, offer opportunities to find guests, build a community, and promote your show. It’s an opportunity that shouldn’t be estimated and that’s why we’re going to talk about how to use Reddit as a Podcaster.

There are a few general subreddits dedicated to guest collaboration that I’ll list below. Further opportunity to discover and connect with guests are going to be more specific to your subject. Consider discovering what subreddits exist that are dedicated to your subject material, or the subject area that you are interested in finding a guest for.

If your show is focused on a science subject, consider r/science as a good starting spot, and look for more narrowly focused subreddits as you need.

If you’re interested in crowdfunding, consider r/kickstarter or r/crowdfunding.

While the below subreddits are specifically for connecting with potential guests, not every subreddit will allow you to post your request for guests. Alternatively, you can use subject-specific spaces to engage with your area of interest and meet others. From there you can follow up with a DM and ask if they have an interest in being a guest on your show. Be sure to observe and follow Reddit’s general rules as well as any additional expectations the subreddit’s moderators may have in place.

Aside from engaging in an already established subreddit, you can create your own if you meet certain requirements.

• Your account must be at least 30 days old
• You must have a certain amount of positive karma (the amount is not public)

If you meet the requirements, you’ll be taken to a page where you can develop your own subreddit where you can establish a name, description, information for the sidebar and submission page, as well as whether your subreddit will be public or not, and many more customization options.

Like any platform, there are pros and cons to making a community here and you should take time to consider if this is the best place for you and your listeners.

Pro

• Easy to use, reddit is fairly intuitive for the user.
• Strong moderator tools, allow for more control of what others post in your community
• Great potential to reach new audiences.

Con

• Accounts are private, this can make it difficult to manage spammers as they can create new profiles and return after they have been banned.
• Incredible high number of subreddits already exist, your content might get lost in the endless stream of new posts being made.

If creating a subreddit for your community isn’t what’s best for you, you should still consider the value reddit can provide as a knowledge community and as an avenue for promotion. Be advised that these groups have strict rules around when, where, and how you can promote your show; review the rules before posting or commenting to stay in compliance and to avoid complications.

Specific areas of podcasting may have their own subreddits, such as r/audiodrama. This subreddit of over 114K readers is dedicated to everything audio drama related. Take a look around as new communities are always forming and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, make it.

Reddit provides a lot of opportunity for a podcaster to engage in established communities and to create their own community. Determining if it’s the right place for the later should be done only after careful consideration of you and your audiences needs.

Reddit continues to be the primary place I find and connect with potential guests, and the many subreddits provide ample opportunity for you to find others to connect with and learn from.
